A couple of Shawls

Shawl: A usually square, rectangular, or triangular piece of cloth worn as a covering for the head, neck, or shoulders.

As you can see by the definition for the word, a shawl is a versatile piece of clothing with many uses.  It can be as complicated or as simple as you want; also it can be made with various material's including yarn.

In The Knitting Basket we have a sample shawl made from Estelle Sakura Silk Yarn, which is 50% silk, 30% cotton and 20 % acrylic and comes in 100 gram balls.

We even carry the free pattern so you can make one yourself. 

The Knitting Basket currently carries two colours of the Estelle Sakura Silk Yarn 

We also carry a very wide range of colours of Patons Silk Bamboo Yarn. The yarn is 70% Viscose from Bamboo and 30% Silk and comes in 65g balls.

That yarn would also make a gorgeous shawl, including this pattern and this one.  The Knitting Basket has this yarn on special at the moment, so why not take advantage of this and make yourself a shawl?  The evenings will be starting to get cooler by the end of next month, so wrapping yourself in a shawl while enjoying a summer's night would be perfect.

Shrugs

A popular item of clothing is a shrug, when you want to add another layer without too much bulk.  A shrug covers a small portion of the upper body. Some shrugs are tied together just below the bustline. Another style is cut off at the sides and thus little more than a pair of sleeves joined at the back.  Shrugs can have long sleeves or short sleeves.  The one below is a short sleeved version using this pattern.

It was made using Sirdar Summer Stripes Yarn, which is 60% Cotton and 40% Acrylic and comes in 50g balls.  The Knitting Basket has three lovely colours on stock and more colours can be ordered.  When first looking at this yarn it's hard to believe the wonderful colours that pop from it.

Another little shrug we have in the store as a sample is a one that is for a baby.  This would be ideal over a onesie when there is a little chill in the air. 

This was knit using Sirdar Americana Yarn and  is 60% Cotton and 40% Acrylic and comes in 50g balls. Again The Knitting Basket has three colours on stock and more can be ordered.  It knits up beautifully and we do have the pattern available, free of charge if anyone wants it, please just ask.

You Can Leave Your Hat On

One thing about knitting is that you can choose big projects or small projects to knit.  Depending on how much time you have, will depend on what project you want to tackle.

One thing that is an easy project with quick results is a hat.  Everyone loves a cozy knitted hat and they can be made with all different types of yarn and in many different patterns. 

The Knitting Basket has a few of the SIRDAR Head Start Kits left.  Look how fabulous they look and so easy to knit and it even includes the furry pompom.  Now don't worry, if a furry pompom isn't your thing, just leave it off .  The yarn is a blend of Acrylic, Polyester and Mohair, we have two colours in stock, grey with a blue pompom and beige with a lilac pompom.  Pick up your kit before they all go! (did you see the basket of Lang Yak, peeking out behind the hat kits?)

Another brand of yarn we stock is Lorna's Laces, which is a hand dyed yarn, that is 70% Super wash Merino Wool, with 30% Outlast viscose, which wicks away the moisture.  They come in 100 gram balls which is perfect for a pair socks, but for those of you who don't knit socks, how about knitting a hat or mittens with it?   The hat in the photo below was knit using Lorna's Lace yarn and using this simple pattern.

Isn't she just so stinking cute? 

She was so simple to make using this pattern.

They can be made in all shapes and sizes, customized to suit what ever occasion, and best of all they use very little yarn.   Imagine giving them out to little Trick or Treater's at Halloween?  Or in the Christmas Stockings; even the older kids would love them in their team colours.  The possibilities are endless and best of all they put a smile on your face.

At the moment, The Escape, Wool Rich Chunky yarn is on special at The Knitting Basket, and it's a 51% Wool and 49% Acrylic yarn which is perfect for this project.  We have limited quantities, but imagine what you could make with it.  We also have lots and lots of other yarn that would be suitable for this project.  Just pop by The Knitting Basket and see what tickles your fancy!!
